Ragas : Bhupali

updated on Jun 15, 2011

Raga Bhupali, is a pentatonic raga, which skips the Ma and Ni notes completely. It is an evening raga and is associated with melancholy mood. The raga is very often confused with raga Desakara, since both of them use the same notes. However, the latter tends to use the upper scales, where as Bhupali is played more on the lower notes. As someone has said about raga Bhupali - "its notes seem to linger in the air long after the singing has stopped"

Other Ragas in Thaat Kalyan:

Chintan, you ask "what is P1 and D1???
    "

It is not P1 and D1. P is Pancham, D is Dhaivat. 'P is mandra Pancham, P is madhya Pancham and P' Is Taar Pancham. Mandra, madhya and taar are saptak in which the note is sung.

    Louise,
You ask "Isn't Bhupali a Bilawal Thaat as Kalyan has a tivra Ma?" This is a very natural question. Theoretically it could have been Bilawal Thaat or Kalyan thaat because you cannot tell whether the varjya Ma is tivra or shuddha. Interestingly, Deshkaar which has the same notes as Bhupali is classified as belonging to Bilawal whereas Bhupali is classified as part of Kalyan thaat.

Bhupali and Deshkar have the same notes Sa Re Gap Pa Dha Sa. and Ma Ni are barjya. So sometimes people misclassify a song in Bhpali as Deshkar or vice versa.

It is impossible to classify a bhupali song a Bhimpalasi because Bhimpalasi has komal Nishad which is varjya in Bhupali and furthermore it has Komal gandhaar while Bhupali has Shuddha gandhaar.

I liked the mention of the pakad. Not many web sites seem to mention pakad, and chalans. Are there more than pakads for Bhopali? Or, is that question answered through multiple chalans?
